September 10th – 14th
The National Independence: Activities related to the Central American independence from the Spanish throne (1821) are the focal point of September’s cultural week. The individual countries of Central America are analyzed as case studies to initiate in-class discussion regarding the presence of Spain in the region, subsequent independence and residual effects, including the various historical directions taken by each country.

October 22th – 26th
Celebration of the Afro-Costa Rican sub-culture: October 11th marks the “Day of the Race”. Celebration is the perfect term to refer to the Afro-Costa Rican culture – with representative colors and clothing, sounds of the Reggae and Calypso rhythms and the layers of flavors in the foods – students experience a carnival-like atmosphere! Learn about the historical arrival of the Jamaican immigrants to assist with the transnational railroad at the turn of the 20th century, their subsequent integration into Costa Rican society and, in turn, the influence of Afro-Costa Rican traditions on the mainstream Costa Rican culture.

November 12th – 16th
Costa Rican Literature (principal authors and genres): Costa Rica possesses a great number of recognized writers utilizing a variety of literary genres. November is the month dedicated to the literary movements within the country and the effects of their works on the mainstream culture.

December 10th – 14th
Typical Christmas celebrations of Costa Rica: A primarily Catholic country, the Costa Rican holidays are steeped in religious tradition. Observation of the different means of celebration proves intriguing to students of all faiths and walks of life. Students learn about the distinct Central American holiday traditions, observe typical decorations, learn Christmas carols in Spanish, and expand their palate as they enjoy holiday samplings commonly found during this joyous season.
