What is the budget per day to study Spanish in Costa Rica?

While comparatively speaking Costa Rica is a small country, shown by the fact that driving from coast to coast - Pacific to the Caribbean - takes only 6 hours through countryside and along one lane highways, it is a country filled with natural wonders, adventure and culture.

Costa Rica is not the least expensive country in....

Latin America to visit, but it is one of the safest with both an educated and friendly populace. Ticos, the locals, are quick to extend a smile or a helping hand to visitors. This warm ambience is complemented by the fact that the Spanish spoken in Costa Rica is lauded as being one of the best in the Americas.  So while the experience is not low-budget, you will find that the quality is high.

As our students plan their Spanish immersion program in Costa Rica an important consideration is detailing a daily budget. Ninety-five percent of our students live with local families at either our Heredia, Monteverde or Flamingo sites. The homestay option – available to individuals, the entire family or couples – includes laundry service and 2 meals daily: breakfast and dinner.  Beyond the responsibility for daily lunch, which averages $8 per day for local fare, much of in-country expenses depend on one’s personal travel style. CPI offers free Latin cooking and dance classes weekly making for a fun cultural experience. And do not forget, a great way to spend an afternoon or two is engaging with the host family practicing the Spanish learned in class earlier in the day.

Half day sightseeing tours are arranged weekly by our bilingual Student Coordinator and these options range in price from $20 - $90, depending on the activity; the higher cost options tend to be the more adrenaline-inducing activities, like bungee jumping. Typically our students take two half day tours weekly. On the week-ends students can opt for single 1 day tours (average $90) or overnight excursions to Arenal Volcano, Manuel Antonio National Park, Tortuguero, Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, the Caribbean Coast or Nicaragua (average $190 - $295).

With proper planning it is certainly possible to experience much of what Costa Rica has to offer, especially for our students who decide to divide their time between our 3 campuses.
